Ann Arbor 'oasis' York expands with new concepts

The owners of a longtime Ann Arbor "neighborhood oasis" are evolving yet again. York, at 1928 Packard St. on the city's south side, is adding wine bar Vinyl & Wine and new event spaces. The expansion projects come from founder and owner Tommy York and partners Sarah Okin, Noah Kaplan and Ethan Kaplan. Okin and the Kaplans joined the ownership group in 2019 after co-founder Matt Morgan left the business.

York, a gourmet food and beverage store in Ann Arbor, Mich., has been acting as a food truck incubator, even giving one of its food truck friends space inside to cook. Ricewood, which specializes in barbecue, began as a truck outside and subsequently moved inside to serve brisket, chicken and burgers. Tommy York of the York cafe at 1928 Packard St. in Ann Arbor said volume has dropped 50-70%, but the cafe is continuing to serve online and pickup orders. On Thursday, York made 50 sandwiches to be delivered to the VA hospital.

“I am so blown away by the generosity. It’s super gratifying to have someone like Ann Arbor Neighbors trying to get money to the local restaurants and help the health care,” York said. “I feel fortunate that we’re operating here ... I’m grateful to my staff and the customers supporting us through this.”
